This is an acrylic painting by one of my 6th grade students. WOW! She did a great job. :o)

Step By Step Watercolor Portraits
In my intermediate watercolor class we worked on portraits. We did a step by step portrait on watercolor paper and then we painted them. The photos posted above are in progress. I will post more photos next week.
Winter Trees
Tonight my beginning watercolor class did two step-by-step paintings. We did a snowy tree painting where we painted either a wash in the sky or a wet on wet wash in the sky. Then the students added some shadows on the snow if they wished. After the background dried we used straws and India ink to create some "spider painting" trees. This is a fun way to paint trees because you can get some unusual shapes.
The second painting was a watery sunset painting. I will add photos of it later.

Fun at RCCAC
Saran Wrap Technique:
Here is an example of the results:
We are going to paint quotes on these soon. :o)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here are some paintings that we did just as practice, while trying out some new masking techniques.
Here are the result of our wax resist paintings:
My Read, Play, Create class read "Where the Wild Things Are". We had a wild rumpus, playing instruments, and made Wild Thing collages.
- tape down your watercolor paper
- paint a wash (or wet-on-wet technique) onto your paper using several colors
- apply a piece of saran wrap and scrunch it up until you are satisfied with the design
- wait until it dries, then remove the saran wrap
Here is an example of the results:

Once again no photos of calligraphy. Sorry. In class we worked on calligraphic writing using the calligraphy pens with nibs that you dip in ink. The students practiced, wrote their names in different fonts, designed a cover sheet for the front of their book, and wrote quotes.

New art student. Yeah! :o)
I had a new student start this morning. What fun. She did one of the techniques that I was talking about a few days ago. She drew a design with oil pastels. Then she painted with watercolor over top of the pastel drawing, creating a resist technique. This student is a first grader.
She also created some artists trading cards out of her paper towel and made a few sketchbooks, which are not shown here.

Watercolor Glue Design
One of my 7th grade students created this design. She drew the design with pencil first and then traced it with glue. After the glue was dry she painted it with watercolors. You could also do this technique with a white crayon, or oil pastel. I have even seen it done with black glue. (add black acrylic paint to a container of glue) It creates a stained glass effect. My student wished afterward that she had either not drawn the lines in pencil or at least lightened them before gluing.

DHS Academy Watercolor Classes
This week in the beginners' class we created these background papers out of watercolor. We painted a wash of various colors and then while the wash was wet we added plastic wrap on top of the wet paint, scrunched it up, and then left it to dry. Once dry we removed the plastic wrap. We are going to write quotes on top of these backgrounds.
In the intermediate class we did a warm-up where we listened to instrumental music and painted dots of color to the music. This exercise was intended to loosen every one up, get them ready to paint and also introduce the idea of painting spots of color, which they will need to do to paint in an impressionistic style.
We focused on Monet today. I showed the class some examples of his work and also photos of his flower garden. Students then chose a photograph to paint from in an impressionist style. Although this idea was new for most of the students they did a very nice job. I will add photos soon. :o)

Calligraphy Class
We also had calligraphy class today but I forgot to take photos. I will try to add some photos of this next week. Today we made hand-sewn books, and practiced using a brush and ink.
The Little Engine that Could
Today in my Read, Play, Create class we read the story "The Little Engine that Could". We made a train out of boxes and then the kids took turns "driving" the stuffed animals over the mountain in our train. The children and their parents also made train collages with paper, glue, crayons and stickers.
RCCAC today :o)
Today at RCCAC we worked on finishing our color mixing, and also began a resist technique where you cover your paper with wax paper, tape it down and then do a drawing on top of the wax paper. We will remove the wax paper and paint these next week. It is a little difficult to see the drawings because my photos are a bit light, and one of my photos won't open for some reason, so there is one missing. Sorry.

DHS Academy
Sorry about the coloring on these photos. They are all crisp white, but my lighting must not have been good for photo taking.
Today my workshops for Davis Health Services employees began at Broaddus Hospital. I taught a beginning watercolor class and an intermediate watercolor class. In the beginner's class we covered tools, and brush techniques, then we spent the rest of the time working on mixing colors. We did the color wheel and the mixing design listed on Monday's post. In my second class, my intermediate students did two step by step paintings. We all began with the same source but everyone added their own elements to it, which adds personality. :o) We did a painting of skiers, and a painting of a stormy sky. I forgot to take my camera, so I will have to add photos next week, but here is my sample of the skier painting.
